Churchill og Roosevelt under WW2: If they want war with us we shall give them war until they have had enough of it.

We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

I say to the House as I said to ministers who have joined this government, I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs - Victory in spite of all terrors - Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.

We propose to draw up a statement of the work of the conference for communication to the Press at the proper time. I should be glad to know what the War Cabinet would think of our including in this statement a declaration of the firm intention of the United States and the British Empire to continue the war relentlessly until we have brought about the «unconditional surrender» of Germany and Japan ...

I dag er tonen fra politiske ledere og kulturelle ikoner noe annerledes. Theresa May, Angela Merkel, Sadiq Khan, Børge Brende, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber og de fleste journalister, politifolk, militære, akademikere og byråkrater mener følgende om hvordan vi bør bekjempe de som angriper oss: keep calm and carry on ... we will not let the terrorists win ... we will keep on living as we used to ... do not let the possibility of a terrorist attack stop you from living your normal life ... being prepared for terror attacks are «part and parcel» of living in a major city ... the terrorists are cowards ... Again we are shocked by cowardly terrorist attacks in London/Paris/Manchester/Stockholm/Nice/Boston/Mumbai. Our thoughts are with the victims of today's attack and their families ... sannsynligheten for å bli rammet av et terrorangrep er mindre enn å bli truffet av et lynnedslag ... Internett nå overvåkes, telefoner må avlyttes .. vi må plassere flere politifolk i gatene og installere flere overvåkningskameraer ... vi må legge ned bamser og blomster og tenne lys på åstedet ... gi personen som står ved siden av deg en stor klem ...

Hvorfor har denne endringen skjedd? Den har skjedd fordi Vesten i dag i langt større grad enn for 70 år siden er preget av etikk som sier følgende: elsk dine fiender ... Sett dere ikke til motverge mot den som gjør ondt mot dere. ... gjengjeld ondt med godt ... tilgivelse er viktigere enn rettferdighet ... selvoppofrelse er det største gode ... dette livet er ikke viktig, det som er viktig er livet etter døden ...

Og denne oppskriften er ikke en oppskrift på seier over terror og tyranni, det er en oppskrift på selvmord. Sic transit ....
